In the wake of its summer "Flashpoint" event, DC Comics will re-number its entire superhero line, debuting more than 50 first issues in September while introducing "a more modern, diverse DC Universe."

The sweeping line-wide change debuts on Aug. 31, when the pubisher releases just two comics -- the final issue of "Flashpoint," and the first issue of "Justice League," under the new creative team of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. According to DC's Source blog, the premiere of "Justice League" will also mark the beginning of same-day digital release for all of the ongoing titles, "making DC Comics the first of the two major American publishers to release all of its superhero comic book titles digitally the same day as in print."

USA Today announced that the changes include costume redesigns for more than 50 superheroes, sprearheaded by Lee, intended "to make characters more identifiable and accessible to comic fans new and old."

No no no no no frakkin frakkin no

"We looked at what was going on in the marketplace and felt we really want to inject new life in our characters and line," Co-Publisher Dan DiDio told the newspaper. "This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today's audience."

In a letter to retailers, DC's Senior Vice President-Sales Bob Wayne explained that the new No. 1 issues "will introduce readers to a more modern, diverse DC Universe, with some character variations in appearance, origin and age. All stories will be grounded in each character's legend -- but will relate to real world situations, interactions, tragedy and triumph."

"Some of the characters will have new origins, while others will undergo minor changes," he wrote. "Our characters are always being updated; however, this is the first time all of our characters will be presented in a new way all at once."

The image that accompanied the USA Today story also holds some clues to how sweeping the post-"Flashpoint" changes will be. It appears as if Wonder Woman's costume will remain largely the same as it's been since Lee redesigned it last year. The other characters' costumes all feature the same uniform neckline, and Superman sports a new "S" symbol across his chest.

Bruins Fans' Hopes Turn Old Enough To Drink!
aka: Four More Wins Does It

21 Years Ago, the Boston Bruins Last fought for the opportunity to raise Lord Stanley's Cup.
Cheers! Slainte! Skoal! HUZZAH!!!
Hockey's Holy Grail is once again in arm's length.
This Coming Wednesday, Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals will commence in Vancouver, BC, CANADA.
The Boston Bruins versus the Vancouver Canucks.

Of the 30 NHL teams that can qualify for the 2 Spots in the Cup Final, only Six of these teams are from Canada.
When a Canadian team is in the Finals, a more resounding & meaningful experience is rendered for esoteric reasons to the Sport Itself.
But Note This: Canadian teams are 0-for-3 in Cup Finals this Decade... (Calgary '04, Edmonton '06, & Ottawa '07).
Or is Canada 0-for-0 this Decade and 0-for-3 last decade but iDigress...
The Last Time a Canadian Team won the Cup was 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens won over the LA Kings.
Then in 1994, the Vancouver Canucks lost against the NYC (patoote!) Rangers. The Canucks' only other Cup Final was in 1982 losing against the New York Islanders.
We Now Come Full Circle with the 1990 Edmonton Oilers being the penultimate Canadian Cup team who won against the Bruins.
It's Not About Who's Year It Is? Or Who Deserves It More. Or About Settling the West Coast/East Coast Thang Which It Most Certainly Could...
It's About Who Earns It. On The Ice. Making No Mistakes. Giving Your All.

I always say, "only one team can win it each year".
Well...it's official. This Could Be Our Year.
You Now Have Permission to Hope.

The Bruins are One Win Away From the Stanley Cup Final...

The Comics Gnome's been pooting out FunnyBook Movies on me three days in a row. I sensed a theme but I didn't know how much I'd really enjoy all three. Really!

It was late Sunday Afternoon. I was flipping through the cable stations when I caught this from the beginning on HBO.

Mystery Men (1999)
I absolutely hated this movie when it came out. It was 1999...I was sick of Ben Stiller & Janeane Garofalo. It was not what I was looking for in a Superhero Movie (and Schumacher's disappointing Batman & Robin was only 2 years before) . It really irked me to tell you the truth. Nonetheless, upon seeing it last Sunday though...my heart must have changed for I was amazed by it's stellar ensemble cast starting with Geoffry Rush as its villain Casanova Frankenstein. Then the rest of the great cast; William H. Macy, Hank Azaria, Greg Kinnear, Paul Reubens, Tom Waits. My heart warmed to Stiller in 2001's Zoolander and to Kinnear in Little Miss Sunshine. It was laugh out loud. I guess I just wasn't ready for it in '99.

Then on Monday, one of my roommates ask me if I've yet seen this recent release and I said no. I'm a big fan of Michel Gondry with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind. I knew this Superhero movie was going to be a bit on the Lighter Side...

The Green Hornet (2011)
and I had a great time watching it.
Again Laugh Out Loud. Sure, it's Seth Rogen playing Seth Rogen. And for the culturally-oversensitive, Jay Chou's English diction will have you wondering "why?"...Jay Chou is as big as Jay-Z in Asia so that's why...and his English diction really makes the character come alive if you ask me. I work with and serve a lot of Asian people. Yeah, they can functionally speak two or more languages and we think it sounds funny? Diges-me...como vie, gringo? eh? Entiendes? Sure that's Spanish but all I know in Chinese is Chop Sticks & Good Morning but iDigress...
And the Car...I'm not a Car Guy but that car is Awesome! Made me feel like a man for liking a car so much.
It's a lot like if Warren Beatty's 1990 Dick Tracy worked as a good movie & story.

I remember this fondly...I tried really hard to like it too. Sigh...

Then Tuesday comes, and I end up going to the movies with a couple of friends.
And I wasn't planning on seeing this until it's home video release so was I delighted when I walked out of that theater feeling like I was 9 years Old Again after reading his first Thor comic...

Thor (2011)
This movie got it all. A great cast which drives the interesting story which smacks of Peter Jackson's LoTR from our 2011 vantage point. Thor was a blast. Fun! I'm seeing it again. My only critique is the same with all of these CGI-dependent movies...it's as if you're watching someone else play a videogame. Besides that, Natalie Portman stole the show. Loki was so well-rendered and cast. Thor Himself was a treat. The movie was a joy to watch. I was OOH!ing and AHHH!ing in the movie theater.
And because I stayed the credits for the Stinger Scene at the end of all these modern MARVEL movies...I am officailly on the hook for this summer's upcoming Captain America. I just gotta see it now after seeing this!

Bring on the Summer Movies! Will I see the Green Lantern? Not at Midnight on Release Night...but maybe...just maybe!
I was saying earlier that FunnyBook Movies were for people that didn't like funnybooks.
These three movies over three nights were a bit too much for sheer happenstance...I think the Comics Gnome Pooted this on Purpose.
What I like to do at Sunday Brunch or Break'est if I'm alone at the bar at the Pub or the Counter at the Diner.

Read. Write. Listen.
I'm listening to an all-J.S. Bach shuffle to drown out the squall of the occasional infant, the snide remark of a Sorority Jumbo or the family of 4 behind me with the ADHD kids banging silverware.
So waiting for my huge break'est of Pancakes, Over Easys with White Toast & Sausage...I'm copying the scribble into my marble Comp book so I can type it here later. This means just by doing this I've read, recited, written and thought about these verses Three Times at the minimum. And I read 'em a bunch of times before I thought about remarking about it...

Every Morning, I read the same book.
But Some Mornings when I'm feeling "Full Of It", I give a Tweet to my Bhagavad Gita.
While I ride the Red Line Subway between 5:18AM to 5:29AM, in the 9 minutes I'm in transit to the Great Field of Life & Work. When Dharma slaps me in the face, I write a crib note in the back of my Gita on one of the few blank pages at the end of the softcover. I date & Chapter/Verse, then I elaborate as only Rev Sully can...in my own HyperContext.
I am a Chef...I compare myself to a warrior, or a samurai. I must not suffer from disillusionment or discerning duty from fickle desire. In all fiction, we become the hero & protagonist...therefore I am Arjuna and Krisna, thank god is driving the car.
As always, I'm reading "The Bhagavad Gita According to (Mohandas Mahatma) Gandhi"

And S#!t!!!...Still All That Debt but iDigress...

Nonetheless, this Sunday AM Will Be Judgement Day for the Local Black 'n' Gold.
Judgement by the Gallery Gawds and the Morrissey Boulevard Hooligans.
In yesterday's Game 4, the Bruins quickly gained a 1st period 3-0 lead only to serve 5 unanswered goals over the remaining 40 minutes, losing 5-3, tying the Eastern Conference Finals 2-2.
I experienced 20 minutes of great hockey including my favorite Bruins Play, the Short-Handed Goal.
The rest of the game...was...hmmm...let's allow the rabble their vitriol, why don't we.

Springtime Dogwalking Haiku...

Blue Jay in Spring Tree
"It's All Right, Ma", Bob Dylan
the bird flew away

I was walking Benny down Highland Ave when I spied a bright blue jay perched on a branch in a vivid cherry blossom tree.
I looked down to access my iPod's camera menu, when I looked back in the whole two seconds it took to look down...of course the bird was gone. And I stopped my shuffle right in the middle of Dylan. Oh well.
It's Alright Ma...I'm only dogwalking.

Lightning Frightening!!!
aka: Post-Game Blues in Hues of Blacks & Golds

Game 1 of the Eastern Finals!!!
It was one of those nights where I’ve previously stated, “Sometimes They Show Up, Sometimes There Don’t”.
And for the Beantown Bees, not showing up for the 1st period, we made the Lightning look like a Blitzkrieg. Finishing the game 5-2, the game was lost in the opening of the first period whence the Tampa Bay Bolts lit the lamp thrice times in 85 seconds.
In the First Period at 11:15, 11:34 (pssst, that’s 21 seconds later) and again at 12:40 (just over One Minute Later), the Lightning had the game won. The Bruins were able to muster two goals all game long.
It was a matter of breaks & momentum. Nonetheless, the Boys over at Morrissey Boulevard are having a great time expressing their frustration & judgments over this.
It’s as if the Jacobs, GM Peter Chiarelli, President Cam Neely and Coach Claude Julien listened to the Globe Bullpen, we’d have had this all figured out a while ago. Although they possess a great caliber of talent, I’m beginning to refer to the Globe Beat Writers as “The Blame Factory”. I’m starting to see DuPont & Gasper as Caiaphas & Antipas from Jesus Christ Superstar but iDigress….

I’d hate to get “nailed” for a bad metaphor though.
But besides the effort or the mistakes…is there a Superstar ready to Shine? Game 2 is Tuesday…

And listening to the game on the radio and hearing the post-game grilling of Coach Julien was not a real treat at all. The Bruins made crucial mistakes that the Bolts picked up on & used. It was like listening to a parent having to apologize before leaving for their kid’s rotten behavior at a cookout or something. It was like being at a Comics Convention, hearing the Fanboys ask the Writers, “Why didn’t you have FlyingMan do This instead of That?” I address even my own irony of writing a Sports/Hockey column in a Age of HyperInformation with the force multiplier Pedantic Lens of Boston Sports Culture. I’m like a naïve little lamb, skipping my way towards every unfruitful post-season.
Well…because I feel that being a Hockey fan has nothing to do with negative Sports Writing or Culture.
Hockey is an opportunity to release negative energies by either playing it or being a spectator of the great sport itself.
It is good to have a competitive, consistent home team that we care about so much. Even if your home team is the Lowell Spinners minor-league baseball team then Enjoy That Goodness.

I did listen to the game on the radio too…there is no such thing anymore as a Televised Home Game, post-broadcast TV. The cable Channel VERSUS is the provider for NHL Playoffs, sharing with NBC who features nationally provided Hockey on weekend afternoons. I won’t be able to watch the Bruins play in my living room until next Saturday! My cable system doesn’t include VERSUS on my bundle. Sheesh! I’d have to go to the Pub! At Night! When they’re PEOPLE there!
Nonetheless, I barely missed a game nearly all season long.
iPuck…Therefore iPod. My little Orange Nano got an FM receiver and the Bruins games are still on the radio, now on the “Dial” at 98.5FM.
True Broadcast Sports. I also pulled up the NHL Dot Com page of Real Time on-ice data. Such a geek. But it was wicked cool…except for the score that was! ;P
So shake off the Game 1 Blues. Hey…we didn’t lose a game all of last series sweeping the Flyers. The Bolts swept the Capitals last series as well, FYI.
Something Had to Give…that’s just Hockey, eh?

Some things are done just right…then get better when you add a little hot sauce.
Rice, tacos, pizza, baked potatoes, chili, beans, omelets & eggs of any variety, salsa, fish, chicken, beef, broccoli…I could go on all day but I’m getting hungry.
Hot Sauce is like Ketchup for Grown-Ups. Those of us who’ve witnessed the eating habits of children know that the Hot Sauce Addiction starts early with Ketchup on Everything!

So OCHO, what is your Favorite Hot Sauce?
We’ll Form Our Own Committee!

Released May 3, 2011…I picked this bottle up, still smoking from its atmospheric re-entry.

A chance at criticism…nothing bad, nothing new.
If you’ve been tuned into the Beastie Boys as long as We have, then you know what you could be getting yourself into. 2007’s Grammy-Wining The Mix Up was a powerful pseudo-jazz instrumental album by the talented trio and utterly flow-less.
Since 1989’s Paul’s Boutique, the Beasties have been a consistent source of NYC Hip Hop, not to even mention their ethnicity which went from novelty to nothing between their 1st & 2nd albums.
So this May’s new Hot Sauce Committee Part Two?
Pretty Dern Good. It’s the Beasties…it’s a solid outing from the 40-something “Boys”.
I’m pretty dern happy with the album after almost two weeks of checking out the new recipe.

It’s still Mix Master Mike’s sonic playground. It’s still AdRock, MCA and Mike D, climbing on aural jungle gyms with virtual NYC neighborhoods & buildings behind them like in a Spider-Man funnybook.
And it might still be nothing but noise for stoners.
Nonetheless, going back into the OCHO Way-Back Machines where Dr. Hooey & Rev Sully are in Infinite Combat over Terpsichorean Ideas…I Produced the Gauntlet of,
“Is Hip Hop Really Music???”…is it music or is it beat poetry over the sampling of other peoples produced musics…or is it Something Unclassifiable and New…We’d Go On and On and Still Do.
I’m still not sure where I stand on that idea after all this time, especially with the early 21st Century & Autotune but iDigress…
I do know that the Beastie Boys play their own instruments and when we strip it all down, they can perform everything they’ve produced as a rock or jazz trio if they so felt the need to tour Unplugged.
Still Great Art. Still Great Sounds. And Yes, Peter…This is Still Great Music Too. ;P
This Hot Sauce got good flavor & lingering heat, not too spicy but still “kickin’”.
Get Yours Fresh at the iTunes Store, $14.99 for a brand new 18-track album of one of my lifelong musical providers, Feeding my Soul.

So OCHO…got a favorite hot sauce?

This is mine.
Louisiana Hot Sauce. The best flavor for anything…
Happy Sunday. I think I’m going to have to cook some rice now…
Just for the Hot Sauce!

BATMAN! Dun-nun-nun-nun-nun-nun-nun-na-Dun-nun-nun-nun-nun-nun-nun-na....BATMAN!

The Comics Gnome is proud to announce the arrival of BATMAN INCORPORATED #6. Completing the first arc in the over-all larger Grant Morrison BATMAN story. and I hear it's wickid fun to boot.
Off to the Funnybook Bodega to get it.

in other comics related news...
tonight is the Series Finale of television's SMALLVILLE. Congrats to 10 Quality Seasons of Televised Superman Stories.
May Posty & I remain Spoiler-Free until we watch it on his DVR. We're about 4 episodes behind on the Finale and have been watching the shows together new for going on 5 years methinks. Lana & Lex were still Big Love & Big Bad...we were catching the End of the Superboy Story.
Then we got the Lois Lane for our generation. Added with a few other heroes including Green Arrow Oliver Queen as Clark's best friend/first hero partner. Unless they show up in the Finale, No Batman & No Wonder Woman (noetheless a great cameo of WW's outfit as Lois' Hallowe'en costume a few years back but iDigress...) Posty & I stumbled onto a show that since we've caught it, has been under the specter of cancellation.
10 Seasons. That's like Dog Years or Light Years. Posty was much more versed on the earlier Smallville than me. I'd only seen a handful and for me it was like 90210 with familiar trappings meets the Meteor Freak of the Week. Then it became The Superman Story.
Layers of years of storytelling. It's own Continuity. It's own chance to Fly or Fail. HUZZAH! Thanks for 10 great years of Superman stories. This past season has had a few misses but to see the realization of comics characters onto the small screen with their distinctive color patterns & variants on their costumes along with very good portrayals...its fanboy elan & bliss I tell you.
May Every Generation have Its Great Superman Stories!

Last Year was Last Year.
Now we can get over it.
The Bruins Sweep the Flyers, 4 games to 0 and advance to the Penultimate Round of the Second Season.

I've been awaiting the Conference Finals as my expectation for a few years now, in These Post-Sinden "Black & Golden Daze".
Next Opponent: The Tampa Bay Lightning. They've won a Stanley Cup in their almost 20 Year Existence and only a few years ago.
The last time the Bruins got to the Conference Finals, the Lightning were an Expansion Team the following year.

These Bolts are the Real Deal but So Are The Bruins.
The Only Thing That Worries Me is Tampa's X-Factor in...
Simon Gagne.
The Ex-Flyer traded last offseason was in this PUCK's humble opinion was perhaps the biggest Philly Phactor in Last Year's collapse, returning as the hero in Game 4 after a broken foot and beating the Bruins 4 straight games. Gagne in French means "To Win" in its Infinitive verb "-er" version, pronounced the same way. Tampa has more reasons to win than just Simon Gagne nonetheless color me concerned anytime this All-Star's on the ice against our Bruins.

Tomorrow Night on Home Ice the Bruins Play.
Game 4.

Apparently I'm missing Nothing on television...for the VERSUS Cable Network is providing the NHL Playoffs and I am not a subscriber. Weird. Cable Packages include lots but sometimes...sometimes little things like this fall through the cracks.
I'm missing Nothing on television for I am enjoying the Games on Radio FM 98.5. It's more my speed lately.
Nonetheless, the game is always in ear-shot.
