Let It Loose!
aka: Exile on Causeway Street

Since a Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss…
Then Let’s Hit Play.
Why don’tcha Let It Loose

A little music to Blog along with. Let It Loose from the Rolling Stone’s nigh-perfect “Exile On Main St”.
Rocks Off. Rip This Joint. Shake Your Hips. Tumbling Dice. Sweet Black (& Gold) Angel. Loving Cup. Stop Breaking Down. All Down The Line.
There’s a message here I think. In the grooves of the album. If we play it !sdrawkcab
Let It Loose! Like a Shot On Goal! The 2010-11 Local Black & Gold seem to be finding their rhythm with the calendar year winding down.
The Stones & the Bruins both made their marks when the Summer of 1972 came about...the Year ONLY percolated the Zeitgeist of my Incubation!
The Bruins won what would be their last Stanley Cup in 38 years.
The Rolling Stones released an objet d’art among their aural masterpieces in “Exile”.
Just Image if Bobby Orr could still play as Mick & Keith "Roll On" even now, huh? But iDigress…

Exile on Causeway Street
A Five Game Road trip….Exile on Causeway! Victories Down South in Miami & Tampa Bay with “Hot’lanta To-Nite!” as the Bijou Should Read. The Bruins already are bringing home the Pelt of a Panther and a Bottle of Lightning…I’d like some Roasted Thrasher with that please.
“I’m the Man on the Mountain…c’mon up”*…the Bruins are now in First Place!
All Down the Bench, players stepping up with a brand of Hockey only We Gallery Gawds Know as Bruins Tough. They’ve surviving the Holi-Daze as Nomads! Hunting & Gathering Standings Points going into 2011.
The Five-Game road trip ends Next Year against Division Rivals with the Bruins at Buffalo taking a 7PM 2nd Chair to Saturday afternoon's 2011 Winter Classic then follows Monday across Lake Ontario in Toronto against the seemingly hapless “Make Be-Leafs”.

Meanwhile…
In Exile from Causeway St., the Beantowne Bee’s are missing the Blizzard of 2010. Really. Thanks Guys! Send me a Postcard from Sunny Goitersburg. No really, I do not mind the snow at all.
Actually the day after X-Mas, local news predicted a Blizzard and I could smell the snow in the air. It was coming. I hunkered down with groceries & beer, coming off a homecooked X-Mas with Ma.
So I’ve gone all Hobbit. With a pipe, pie, parcels of protein, plenty of time to cook and lots of Hockey to Stay Up & Watch. My Work is closed the week ‘tween X-Mas and NYE so I’m home with nothing to do but cook!
Everything from scratch too from X-Mas leftovers shared with OCHO’s very Own Peter to weekly tomato sauce & massive pasta bake, 3" thick Medium Rare burgers of distinction , the best black beans you’ve never had**, daily break’est with homefries, toast & sausage, sammiches for lunch, yogurt smoothies, oven baked berry crisps with a la minute whipped cream…also a whole chicken broken down into 2 Statler breasts & 2 1/4 leg piece with the leftovers....you guessed it: 1 gallon of Chicken Stock.
And VEAL STOCK!!! I found 5+lbs of veal bones yesterday at the butcher, roasted them along with roasting some mirepoix and let simmer overnight...so my plan today is to make real, honest-to-goodness Demi-glace like I used to at Temple Bar (will keep indefinitely frozen!). Yes I’m making a Remi out of the bones…why ask? ^_~
I have yet to bust out my KitchenAid therefore the First of One Hundred things to make will be Pizza Dough. All you need is Flour, Sugar, Water & Yeast: Check.
The Second of “the First One Hundred Things I Make with my KitchenAid”*** I will be Toll-House Cookies; Brown Sugar, Butter, Flour, et al: Check!…Hey I gotta leave something to do tomorrow!
I’ve gone Native Hobbit this week...you wouldn't believe it but an actual Hobbit solicited me for a story…get this...

Totally Rolling Stone but for Hobbits. Look for it at Fine Newsstands & Supermarket FunnyBook Spindles Soon!

24/7…Too Much or Right On?
What is the PUCK doing New Year’s Eve? You’re looking at it. I stay in! NYE is for amateurs and you can tell anyone going out, “Sully Said That”. I don’t even stay up! That’s past my bedtime. New Year’s Day, the Winter Classic will be on with the Capitals versus the Penguins outdoors at Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA in the Afternoon. If you’re Tuned In and can get it, I’ve been watching the fascinating HBO SPORTS Documentary Show 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic starring the Pens & the Caps. Really great on-ice game footage, showing life in the locker room, juxtaposing a 1st place team & a struggling team. Unintentionally Hooked on this show and I’m going to make Break’est now and watch last night’s new episode OnDemand.
24/7 Road to the Winter Classic isn’t about the Pomp & Circumstance of the day of the Event, rather it’s an intimate look at NHL Life. It’s a bit like “Slap Shot” but reality television.

On that note….I drop this PUCK! Game on!

Crea shaakti,
Rev. Sully
*Loving Cup by the Stones from “Exile” …Bruins Fans Want to Drink from that Loving Cup, alright.

Happy Xmas to all and a Merry New Year.

I just finished reading your latest Sul and love the fact you made Duck a l'orange for Xmas dinner. I actually made that exact recipe about 6 months ago for the first time after acquiring 2 smallish duck after a clients very successful duck hunting escapade (who am I to turn down free poultry?). The meal itself was fairly successful even though I did have to be a little inventive with some of the ingredients. What let my dish down thoroughly was my lack of confidence in what to serve as a side dish. I have to say I am totally inspired by your offerings. That sweet potato bake especially ~ yum! I don't know about Martha Stewart but I am sure Julia Child would have been proud!

I am also going to have to try the fennel thing. I normally have a ton of the stuff in my garden ('cause it attracts the good kind of bugs) but have recently ripped it all out due to the fact it was inhibiting my cilantro from growing (apparently they don't agree with one another when confined to a small space). I had used the leaf and the seed in lots of dishes but never the bulb mainly because it seemed way too strong to put into anything - but that sounds yummy. I may have to create another patch on the other side of my yard...

It sounds like you had a good day with your Ma ~ if she ever does figure out how to email the photos make sure you post one or two of them xo

I think I had myself a Merry Little X-Mas. Did you? I hope you did filled with friends, family & food!

My Christmas was nice & simple and I got the Greatest Gift of All…
I made my Mother very happy. In fact, she was delighted & blissful all Christmas Day and it was All My Fault.

We begin on X-Mas Eve, at 7AM, when I wake up on a day off. I have the instinct to go to the store and get everything I need so I follow through on it. I also know that dessert was not discussed so I “volunteer” it to myself.

My Mother had requested my presence not just X-Mas Day but X-Mas Eve as well. Her boyfriend would be stranded with his family; his ex, their adult children & 5 grandkids. The Aunties, her Sisters, aka The Grand Dames went to Florida via Atlanta for X-Mas to visit family.
Leaving my Ma all alone for X-Mas? Nope. Not gonna happen…not on my Watch. ^_~

Interlude: okay…if anyone who’s read OCHO can tell, I like to have a good time. But I am just an acorn to my family tree. My Ma is the Original. All the qualities she possesses, I have as well. Chopra says, "what pisses you off in others, you probably exhibit these qualities as well”…well that’s a Sully Paraphrase and you know it. One thing that stresses me out is when I show up and Ma’s already “in the Cups” so to speak. Then I think of myself when I’m wasted and my friends enduring me…but iDigress…

About 6PM I show up at her condo, where she lives alone when her boyfriend isn’t around. Framed pictures are everywhere.
I feel like Barry Allen walking into the Flash Museum everytime…with all the framed pics.
Oh yeah…and Ma’s a little crocked. Also she’s prepped nothing to boot….she neither got her list of the groceries nor pull the duck from the Icebox.
I sigh, the Anti-Om.
Nonetheless I roll with it. I brought some groceries. As I said…I had a distinct feeling to bring everything I needed. Everything.
I find that my life is happier when I listen to my Little Voice. The Good “Little Voice” not the one that tells me to throw dead batteries at douches…

The one thing Ma was supposed to get she got the previous weekend; the Entrée.
The 6 lbs Long Island Duck (whole).
Ma even forgot to take the duck out of the freezer (which I did at 9PM and left in a big stock pot of cold water and left out on the counter overnight…the bird was completely thawed by the time I fired it 16 hours later).
We planned this after Thanksgiving…Ma wanted a Duck for X-Mas.
I decided I was cooking Duck a l’Orange in the French Tradition. I found a recipe at Epicurious Dot Com originally published in Gourmet magazine in 1943. Next to a 1959 recipe by James Beard himself although I went with the former.
If you go to the link, the recipe features a Shopping List button…GENIUS!!!
I brought these ingredients along with a few Sweet Potatoes and three Fennel bulbs. A starch & vegetable for the protein. One Sound Plate.
We O’Sullivan’s are known for our over-loaded dinner tables, filled with all different kinds of vegetables so this table I had sketched in my head was the brass tacks of dinner…Ma was getting the other sides and breakfast needs too.
Ma spent the X-Mas Eve day doing what she liked involving red wine. I’ve had plenty of days like this too.
I was calling upon all my Guru’s Wisdom not to react badly, misbehave, or be judgmental…
In essence to NOT ruin frakkin’ X-Mas!
I possessed the power to ruin X-Mas ONLY if I chose to judge that Ma ruined X-Mas.
And Ma didn’t…so I didn’t. Everything was alright.

So Ma wanted Duck for X-Mas. Right on! I practiced with OCHO’s very own Peter & his wife one early December night this Epicurious recipe from 1943. I’d never done executed roast duck before let alone the French Canard a l’Orange. And I am so grateful for the practice because this 2nd duck came out better!

So X-Mas Eve night we go to get Chinese Food as per the Plan.
North Quincy's Finest Chinese & Polynesian Palace was…well…meh.
From food, to other guests, to their lounge and to the smell of the restaurant itself.
I was still fighting Yesterday's hangover headache, now the Force Multiplier X8!...sheer annoyance with my tipsy & slurring but well-meaning Ma. Whose sole karmic mission at that moment was to unintentionally push every button I had with “Remember This when you were a Kid?”
Again the Anti-Om...Sigh.
I don’t want to meltdown or be annoyed with her…she’ll get vicious! For real…she’ll turn on a dime and get mean!
So I didn’t. I’m a grown man and just roll with it and Endure It as Krishna told the Archer in the Bhagavad Gita 2:14.
Nonetheless…we packed the Pu-Pu Platter to go and Ma nipped the table’s Bread Rolls.
All of them. We ended up calling it an early evening and headed back to her condo.

Meanwhile...Christmas Morning…
I awoke first.
I turned on the oven...then the Imagination Machine in my Head and had Break'est started just as Ma was getting up.
I plugged in my iPod with the Morning Playlist and chat with Ma while my Improv Break'est Plan Cooked.
Since Ma didn’t get to the Supermarket, I was beheld to a fridge on the bare side with the exception of the sundries I’d brought with me, basically ingredients for dinner.
What Ma did have was a 1/2 dozen eggs and a few bananas...
So I cut up the Chinese restaurant’s pilfered dinner rolls and soaked them in beaten eggs seasoned with vanilla & cinnamon. I cut a banana on a bias and layered the whole thing in a baking pan and threw it in the oven...350deg for 20 minutes.
I also heated up Round 1 of Pu-Pu Platter leftovers. FYI: The best way to reheat Chinese leftovers are in the oven. I threw that pan in the oven as well.
I am just an Acorn. I love Chinese leftovers for break'est. Ma does too. It is X-Mas...
The Chinese Leftovers went over exceptionally well at 9AM alongside my “Chinese French Toast”. Ma was impressed with my resourcefulness.
You know me in the kitchen though…I was just getting warmed up.

The French Toast Bake was just an excuse to get the oven hot.
iThen moved onto the Holiday Playlist on my iPod. iRawk Therefore iPod you know. ^_~
I needed to bake my Sweet Potatoes. I had a culinary vision I needed to pull off…which I did. A workmate mentioned making a baked sweet potato then I one-upped it with the idea of...
a Twice-Baked Sweet Potato.
What I did was to bake off & prep my Potatoes in the AM to be ready fire at dinnertime in the Afternoon.
The duck needed 2 1/2 hours at most and the potatoes simply needed to be reheated up & bruleed
I foil wrapped & fired the sweet potatoes in an hot oven until soft, 400deg for 45 minutes or less. I selected larger & stout sweet potatoes as opposed to the thinner variety.
I hollowed the sweet potatoes VERY VERY CAREFULLY leaving a bit of the potato on the sides to make a shell. In a deep bowl, the hot sweet potatoes add…
a few pats of unsalted butter and mash with a fork, masher or what I use a whisk.
Taste, salt, pepper.
a few pinches of fresh minced thyme
a spoonful of molasses
1/2-3/4 fresh ground whole nutmeg
several sprinkles of ground cinnamon.
These ingredients are added To Taste. Meaning taste as you go along to the flavor, consistency & viscosity as you like your mashed potato. This is meant to be naturally sweet (so easy on the molasses, light or dark brown sugar would work as a substitute) so spices are the nutmeg & cinnamon (powerful! Be careful) and smoothness, unsalted butter with flavoring of kosher salt & fresh ground black pepper.
I put these aside until I needed to fire them for the dinner table. I put a pat of salted butter* on top of the now cold spuds before I fire. I put these taters in the 350deg oven for 10 minutes. (*Salted Butter has its place...it's just y'know...wickid salty and could throw your recipe off. It's better as a spread or a finishing touch for flavor)
I will finish these off with mini-marshmallows, overstuff the top with abundance and fire off until the top of the marshmallow is brulee…a caramelized brown. About 5 more minutes...crank the heat too if you need to.
The sweet potato skin ended up being not very edible…the shell became a vessel for the sweet potato puree with the marshmallow brulee.
Nonetheless…this was a success and a big hit.

About 12Noon we had Round 2 of Pu-Pu Platter leftovers.
My Ma’s wish was to “eat our way through Christmas”. That was my Duty & Mission and I was happy to oblige.
We have our first beer of the day together. We smile. Clink! CHEERS!

I had also brought a vegetable.

The Fennel Bulb.
An Onion made sweet love to some Celery and ended up having an Anise Flavored Baby.
This is one of my Chef’s recipe. For Karen P, my current sous chef. I made her famous & delicious…
Braised Fennel
Cut the bulb in Half, remove the inedible knot at the bottom with a triangular cut and Slice Thin.
A Single Layer into a greased, buttered or sprayed shallow pan such as a Pyrex pie dish or the such. Use more than one pan if need be.
Pour Heavy Cream (or Half & Half for the wussies) into the pan to come up 1/2way to the fennel…you do not need to submerge the fennel.
Then simply top with normal store-bought common powdered Parmesan Cheese. I thought the Parmesan Reggiano I worship…would have been too much, both in richness of palate & wallet. There is a place for the Kraft Powdered Parm cheese we use in pizza joints.
This gets fired off in a 350deg for 30 minutes or until the fennel is tender to bite and the cheese has browned. Get the cheesy top of this simple casserole BROWN…real flavor is gained.

Oh yeah…then I made Duck a l’orange.
In the French Style. Making the sauce with the caramel…eccume the pan juices, zesting the orange, white wine & white wine vinegar. The sauce came out really good. Perhaps the vinegar was a big flavor and I think I used a little too much orange zest. Overall it was great.
Beyond Great, my Ma was Delighted! The Duck, the Fennel which she’d never experienced & adored…then the Twice-Baked Sweet Potato was a marvel to behold & divine to taste.
With 20 minutes remaining on the duck, I put a lower rack in the oven and fire the Fennel.
Since the fennel takes 30-40 minutes, and upon removing the duck to rest & make the Sauce...I now fire the Baked Potatoes without the mini-marshmallows. 15 minutes after firing the sweet potatoes, pull them, top with an abundance of mini-marshmallows then return to the oven.
The fennel & potatoes should finish at the same time you're finishing the l'Orange sauce for the duck on the stove top. As the duck rests, I'm using the pan drippings with stock & the orange syrup to make the l'Orange sauce right before dinner.
Right about then, Ma thought it was really Food Network kinda stuff & she was right. She was beaming.
I got to play Top Chef for my Ma.

I got Ma a digital camera for X-Mas so she got to do one of her favorite things and take pictures all day long.
This meal is fully documented. Once she figures out how to email them is a story for another day…
My gift from her was a boom-box style karaoke machine that I found had an iPod jack.
I happily cooked & ate & hung out with Ma all X-Mas Day long listening to my Holiday Playlist.

I did have the “feeling” in The Force to make desert.
So I made a simple Blueberry/Banana Crisp that I now love to crank out because they’re kinda easy to make.
I honeyed some slice bananas and layered on top of the blueberries (I use frozen blueberries…sorry! ;P).
Here are the Cliff’s Notes that live in my iPod. Now I can elaborate on this foundation…
Blueberry Crisp with Oatmeal and Almond Topping Bon Appétit | August 2001
Yield: Makes 6 servings

3 1/2-pint baskets fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons plus 1/4 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup sliced almonds
Nonfat vanilla frozen yogurt

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Rinse blueberries. Drain, allowing some water to cling to berries. Place berries in 9-inch-diameter glass pie dish.
Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons brown sugar and cinnamon; stir to blend. Let stand until sugar dissolves and coats berries.
Stir oats, flour, salt, and remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar to blend in medium bowl.
Add butter and rub in with fingertips or fork until moist clumps form. Stir in almonds.
Sprinkle oat mixture evenly over blueberries.
Bake crisp until berries are bubbling and topping is golden, about 35 minutes.
Serve warm, each serving topped with a spoonful of frozen yogurt.

My Big Idea was this. I made…
fresh handmade Whipped Cream.
One Pint of Heavy Cream
2-3 oz 10X Powdered Sugar
1 capful Vanilla Extract
all you now need is a normal whisk & a deep bowl. Put the bowl in the fridge for a while. Pour heavy cream, sugar & vanilla in bowl…
and whip. Hit it. Don’t be a wuss.
Whip it like the DEVO song. Hit it as an umpire brushes off homeplate, briskly with vigor! HUZZAH!
For literally 8-10 minutes. Sometimes I take a break for a minute and put the bowl in the freezer. Friction with overbeating will mess up your cream. You’re looking for what we call “Peaks”, the ability of the now aerated whipped cream to withstand gravity & hold its form when manipulated. It takes 8-10 minutes of furious beating & chilling out but the result is delicious, fresh and simple.

With the exception of the Chinese Food, everything I made from scratch.
Martha Stewart Be Proud. ^_^
Heck…My Mother Be Proud.
That was a very special X-Mas for the Sully’s, both Rev. & Ma Sully.

Just to let you know...that X-Mas Day, Ma sent me home with the last of the Pu-Pu Plater leftovers, aka Round III.
Round III commenced at 11:30PM, Dec 25th, 2010 in my apartment after getting home.
The next day I told my Ma about the fate of the Chinese Food and all she could say was...
"Uh UH!!!
heh! I finished off the Pu-Pu Platter.
I was in my glory...break'est lunch & supper.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas...

I've been listening to this NPR Radio show for pert-near an hour...
I've been in nigh-tears mostly the entire story. Good tears...the kind you get watching a good movie & it hits you in the Right Place.

I heard a fragment of this story about a month ago on the radio so it was familiar.
The part about the Native American genius who said "No!" to the 1950s & lack of equality and reached his goal to be a NASA Engineer. The story was told by a man who was consigned to craft this Story
It's a Love Letter To NASA on their 50th Birthday.
And it's a Spoken Word Tale over 45 minutes long.
It's charming and emotive.
Listen to it here
Master storyteller Jay O'Callahan really nailed me in my heart too. Reading aloud in a One-Man Show on the NPR Radio Station one random Saturday AM. It filled my heart with stars...
This gets filed under the Empathic Civilization as well. Pay Attention to the Moon Landing and "We Did It" and the Voyager Album. That's Us Out There Too!

I feed MIT Grad students all day long too...they're for whom I cook & serve.
It's a beautifully crafted & told story.
And expect intermittent showers under your eyes but only if your heart's working right.

iRawk…Therefore iPod!
Holi-Daze Hangovers Edition!

The 5th Generation iPod nano, circa 2009-early ’10.
Nickname: Arios Gundam, named after my Favorite Anime Giant Robo.

Feliz Navidad! Mele Kalikimaka! Merry Frakkin’ Christmas!
I am totally spending a day “wasted”, hungover & uncooperative!

I am the 3rd Thing of X-Mas That is Such a Pain to Me!!!

It’s not that bad…I am well enough to want to go to the Pub for dinner. But then the Martian in my Brain doing the Watusi reminds me that sitting down is best. One more Alka-Seltzer could be Lethal!

Mele Kalikimaka!

The Grand Dames of my Family return to Sunny Florida for X-Mas leaving a really true Holi-daze with me & My Ma. Wish me luck. No Jameson’s Allowed this year (or perhaps ever again!). X-Mas Eve, Me & My Ma go to one of Quincy’s finest Chinese Food Palaces and attack the Lounge, for Drinks & Appetizers! Then X-Mas Morning Break’est followed by Duck a l’Orange for X-Mas Dinner. I have a great, tiny table for two planned that I’ll share on a “Get In My Belly” next week.

I got iTunes Loot for X-Mas!!!
In a card, in the Mail. I put the card on the fridge! And I put the Loot to Use Right Quick!
I’ve been thinking about getting a serious book about a serious subject.
Negotiation. Really…for at work and in life. When I worked at Harvard Law School, I was exposed to the world of Alternate Dispute Resolution; Mediation and Negotiation.
And these are great modes of thought to execute.
Do you have problems at work? Or in getting what you want? I’ve been fascinated by the subject since!
As I started, my eyes have been on a certain book…the Bible of Negotiation started at Harvard Law by people I served…

Getting To Yes by Roger Fisher, William Ury & for the 2nd edition Bruce Patton.

I got the bright idea to apply my $15 iTunes Gift Card onto what I asked Santa for…
the Good Book I Really Wanted.
So I got the Unabridged Audiobook version of “Getting To Yes”.
6+ Hours. But all Input. In a mnemonic device I can internalize.
I call it “reformatting my SoulDrive”.
This is invaluable input. My AM Playlist takes a backseat until I’m done “reading”. But for me, I value the re-reads…s’when I internalize it. I’m halfway through and I’m having the best time. I have ample time in which to enjoy a longer audiobook and I’m learning something too. I see a tapestry of great & evolving ideas since going iPod and surrendering to a River of Energy & Information with deep non-fiction audiobooks. From Deepak Chopra to Art of War & Miyamoto Musashi’s Go Rin No Sho and Easawaran now to a valuable kit of strategies basically advising a Middle Road in a Classic Buddhist sense. “Getting To Yes” is a Dharma on Humans Being Human. I’m so happy to be “reading this”. I’m advising OCHO’s very own Peter to “read” this as well…he’s starting his own Blog on being a Project Manager and the evolving skills it takes to succeed in that role. Good stuff. More on that Later…

Holi-Dazed!
I am still delighted by my Holiday Music and Singing Along to the Classics.
And Sharing Them too!
Both X-Mas songs are played daily, sometimes a few times in my Holiday Playlist.
Even today, all hungover & grumpy. Unproductive. A little lack for the luster, aujord’hui. Good thing the sun is setting, my light sensitive eyes are reeling from a day of teashades.
Say a prayer for me, of survival. Nothing pushes my buttons more than my Ma wasted on the Holi-daze. Nonetheless…carpe diem! I’m gonna buy her something nice for X-Mas.
I hope you do the same!
Happy Holidays! And Merry Christmas! May you dinner turn out just Ducky too! Huzzah! We’ll be listening to the Holi-daze Playlist all Day long. At least I get to go home X-Mas night!
May Your Holidays Be Stress-free.
Moksha Ganesha! Moksha From Stress! Say It Aloud and May You Too Tune Into That but iDigress…

Waiting For Delivery…
aka: Bottle the Brewin’ Storm!

Sometimes…I am lazy.
Such as today/tonight. Brunch at the Pub. Naps, liberally napping. Then.
Then the Bruins Game with Beer & Delivery.
BBQ Wings with Ranch Dressing. Some Delicious Toasted Submarine Sammich. And a dessert.
I hope to be awake for the 3rd period. Or OT as it swings much the time.
Tonight: Washington Capitals in Beantown Faire.
I can kinda-howl at an Almost-Full Moon.
Waiting For Delivery…for my dinner and from a 3-game losing streak.
Bruin News? Ahhh…nuffin much. Just enjoying another action-packed Bruins Season. Let’s just savor the moment. The Beer. The Sammich. The Game.

Brewin’ News! Wuxtry! Wuxtry!
What the Hell am I doing???
Seeing this I ask the important questions…
video
Do I need an Haircut? Am I really that frakkin’ bald???
OCHO’s very own El Post filmed this on my iPod nano.
Bottling Our Brew.
I'm taking a simple hose vacuum device attached to a wand and manually filling bottle with the 5 gallons of delicious, homebrewed stout we've made.
This is Good Team Work.
An Imperial Stout, held for 11 months. We added more yeast & sugar then we bottled & capped the beer. We brewed this with a zeal best left for craft such as this.
Unbounded by nothing but the limits of imagination & taste. Literally.
We possess the dual shock & awe flavors of rich spicy Dutch Cocoa…
Then it meanders off into the Cardamom florals along with the high alcohol content & sweetness of the malts & molasses we’re left with a finish that quite literally runs for me…”Wasabe meets good Gin in an Imperial Stout”. The Sweets of the Malts let to a Soy tinge that I tasted in my sense-memory of eating sushi and mixing the wasabe into the soy sauce…
Brewin’ News…will be ready to drink in 6-8 more weeks.
To Be Continuted…

Puck’s about to drop. The doorbell’s about to ring. Let’s get it on. Smoke a PUCK and enjoy a Saturday Night!

The Bruins Won. But I fell asleep in the 3rd Period for Two Reasons:
Food Coma & Boring Play.
I like Juxtaposition. I think that I am on the Positive Side. Yet...
The Boston Sunday Globe's Weekly Article Following Last Night's Game. When Kevin Paul Dupont says They Turned Into Zombies in the 3rd Period, KDP is not wrong at all.
Nonetheless the article is fraught with negative energy, the natural idle hum of Boston Sports Culture. Nothing is Good Enough. Sure...KDP's breakdowns are spot on, yes indeed.
Also I noticed something terrible...
Have I been ripping off my "mentor & hero" KDP? KDP's weekly screed that I've been reading since I was eye-level to a barstool has been an obvious influence on my Hockey Blog.
Or is KDP in the Gonzo Fastline I drive through...does he use Gonzo as a Passing Lane? I wonder...

Would Anyone Like me to Explain "Pizza Rolls" again?

It's one Big RTFM.
I've posted this once so let me frame it again.
From the awesome xkcd....BEHOLD!

The Star Wars Holiday Special was initially broadcast in 1978 and I saw it live as a kid. It was never broadcast again.
It in fact was disavowed by George Lucas
...kinda like what I do to the Prequels Now after Pizza Rolls but iDigress...
I happened upon a VHS copy of the Holiday Special 20+ years ago at my only encounter with a Comics Convention.
I still own it...and began the bizarre idea of making homemade pizza rolls...

So I fabricated some Homemade Pizza Rolls using The Force.
I bought One Pillsbury French Loaf. My mom's been using this for years for her Holiday Calzone shell.
I unrolled it flat and simply marked in a grid with the edge of a spatula in a rocking motion.
I sprinkle of shredded Mozzarella Cheese, Over One HALF of the Dough ONLY! not too much but keep in the center of the markings!
a spoon of Tomato Sauce. I used my weekly Ragu. Fresh delicious.
Then I ran my sharp chef's knife through a small stack of pepperoni and made a fine dice...
I sprinkled the pepperoni in the center.
I folded the dough over and once again
used the edge of the spatula and rocked to the marks I previously made, creating little pillows. Basically raviolis.
I took care separating and then using a fork I crimped the edges. I beheld and ate a really great snack.
The Pillsbury dough was a complete cheat though but I baked off in an hot oven, 350-400deg 10-15 minutes on a baking sheet lined with foil and a quick PAM Spray.
Immediately remove from baking sheet or the backs will burn!

So I did something silly...
video
iShot this on my iPod nano. This is a parody and homage to the comedic YouTube Star Wars Prequel reviews...

If you watch all of his movies...then you too might be left with this to say when asked about Star Wars.
Pizza Rolls!. First mention of Pizza Rolls is at the end of Part 2 of the Phantom Menace review here and follows the entire rest of the project. Revenge of the Sith Review is forthcoming very soon!

Pizza Rolls...The Only Thing left To Say About The Star Wars...

POSTSCRIPT on the PIZZA ROLLS: GET IN MY BELLY 12/18/10 -eo's
I mailed this to OCHO's very own El Post when he asked "How'd they come out?"
So I thought it good 'nuff to share with the Class
"No prob! Hope you liked the video. I was feeling goofy...
The Pizza Rolls were high-end mediocre. Next time I'd use fresh pizza dough instead of the Pillsbury product. And less-to-no corn meal. I used yellow cornmeal to aid in rolling the dough out of its loaf/log form. it needed the grip lest the french loaf dough would tear upon unrolling. The yellow cornmeal added a sweetness that was unwelcomed nonetheless consistent with the crust & bottom of a good pizza...perhaps white cornmeal is the ticket? Will make it again but definitely with fresh pizza dough. Perhaps also pre-make the mozz cheese, sauce & filling into one homogenized prepped mix then add to the dough by the spoonful without leaky assembly. I'm picking up a dough scraper today at the Supermarket...great for edges and marking dough. Doctor Hooey makes them too for their toddler & they use fresh wheat pizza dough from Supermarket. "

Remember: Pizza Rolls, as something you purchase from the Supermarket in the Frozen Food section to heat & eat for yourself & your children, is #21 on the list of 101 Things That Should Not Exist. Fresh Pizza Rolls simply Have to be healthier for you especially if you use fresh dough...perhaps the first mission for my new KitchenAid mixer.

Sturm Und Dang! Off to LaLa Land for Marco…
aka: Set Course for the Future!

Sturm und Dang! The Storm has Returned to the West Coast. The last piece of the Joe Thornton Trade has now left the Gahhden. Marco Sturm was traded to the LA Kings this week. Marco’s been recovering from knee injury and the Bruins now have too much talent.
The Pride of Dingolfing, GER & a 2010 Olympian was traded for “Nothing”, relief for the Salary Cap. “Future Considerations”. Something will come out of this eventually. The “Player To Be Named Later”.
2nd Chances are Great. Thanks & auf wiederseren! We had a great time in Black & Gold. Perhaps in LA with a full 82 Game season next year, Sturm can finally find his dormant scoring touch and break the 30 Goal Plateau. Good Luck!…

…Nonetheless the Future Calls Right. And I simply Obey The Future.

Create Opportunities.
Realize Space/Time, Find its Ripeness of Potentiality.
Hockey is Life, the PUCKs Personal motto.
All these things apply on the Bench and in Life.

The Tired & Sleepy Meet the Fierce & Loyal
Three Games this Week. How did I enjoy them? Mostly Asleep listening on the Radio.
Seriously. I rouse at key moments and stay alert just to hear the score.
Such as last night…I was exhausted from a day of leisure, of beer drinking, grass smoking and most definitely the food coma of Chinese Food…turning all my effort into making the day “wasted” read ironic for I was having such a goodtime…
So I retreated to my bedroom, tuned into the 7PM Bruins on the FM Dial & dozed. It wasn’t too boring but I caught 1-0 PHI after dreaming through the 1st and most of the 2nd Periods…then Horton ties the Game in the 3rd! Although we lose in overtime with another errant Marc Savard pass in another game against the Flyers (Game 7 of the Playoffs this past May)! I roused when that happened…Mike Richards snagged a loose pass & walked it in on Tim Thomas for the “Louisiana Play”…Blue Bayou.
Even dating back to being a teenager on the couch watching an away game on WSBK TV38, if it was a snoozer then I would snooze!

Deck The Halls!
Get into the Spirit! I’ve put up my Stocking on the Grandfather Clock where everyone can see it.
No need to ask “Who’s it is?” right?

Almost Kinda Like the One I got a few years back.

I strung the lights and pulled out Dusty Old St. Nick & sneezed the rest of the evening…(maybe s’why I retreated to my room to get away from the dust bunnies with Jet packs).
I also placed my VHS copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special on top of the little TV with the Built-In VCR JUST IN CASE!!!

I’m off! To change ‘em up. To create. To live under my Salary cap.

I’m gonna go to the Super market to make some homemade pizza rolls then perhaps do something Silly.

iRawk…Therefore iPod!
Old Videos Predict Current Trends Edition!

The 5th Generation iPod nano, circa 2009-early ’10.
Nickname: Arios Gundam, named after my Favorite Anime Giant Robo.

iTunes Loot! I love it. $15, $25, or $50 Gift Cards as Budgeted Allowance.
I like to think that a denomination such as $15 on new music per every few months is a decent thing to do. People think I’m batty Paying For Music, I think I’m doing all right.
On a Saturday oaf, chilling out I went a little spend crazy for singles
and ended up recharging the account to get the Album I saw just got released…

In almost 2011 England, there are similar scenes as in the 80s pop video by Duran Duran I just bought from Duran Duran’s 1983 “Seven & The Ragged Tiger”.
Crowds of Young People in the Streets. Crowd controlling with truncheons, shields & cops on horseback, in the wake of the British Gov’t raising University Costs by 3X!!!

I bought the single as a video once again. To “New Moon on Monday”…I love this song & its video. Time Machine Go!

I also bought “Hold back The Rain” from Rio as well in the mood for New Wave. We listened to this track over & over again when I got my stereo with Duran Duran’s Rio after we “found it”. Some of the individual music singles now cost either $.69 cents, $.99 cents or $1.29 now.
It’s not so bad…paying for music. It’s funny, sometimes I end up watching these videos I buy on YouTube through OCHO more than on my Little Orange Mecha.
Feels good to know I contributed somehow.

To boot, I had to go get more iTunes Loot in order to afford this.
At $9.99 for 24 music tracks is dandy…once I connected the dots I was ready to buy it…
End of Line.

TRON: Legacy Soundtrack by Daft Punk.
I’m already in love with it. I’m Spoiler-Free on the Movie Itself and aim to enjoy the experience. The music though…I really dig Daft Punk.
Listening to its soundtrack makes me look forward to seeing the movie. Bought on a sheer impulse! I knew I hadda have it and listen to it immediately.
It’s chock full of Danger Music!
Or as if Daft Punk did the heavy metal artsy-thing and performed with an orchestra.
Hey, it works. No Wendy Carlos, No Journey but seriously all Daft Punk meets an 85-piece orchestra!
TRON holds a special place in my space/time. Like the 80s videos my harddrive was formatted with as a child.
If the movie is as good as its score, then we should all be entertained.
I'm listening to the TRON Legacy soundtrack, and although I've yet to see the movie or any trailers or television commercials...and I'm overwhelmed with Quantum Particles from my Brain & Memory...senses & remembrances of a different Space/Time. Doctor Hooey would prescribe liberal applications of this Satellite Radio station Cinemagic. I never got into the Satellite Radio thing even with Howard Stern going there uncensored. Nonetheless, when working at the restaurant in the mid-Dubble Aughts, I'd tune into Cinemagic via the Dish Television the bar had...and I'd turn up the volume in the empty restaurant for a spell...so while I was cooking alone up on the kitchen line I could hear rich & diverse Movie Soundtracks. The only other person there at that hour were 1 or 2 dishwashers...they didn't mind. So I'm getting this warm feeling, a good vibration listening to this really good new Movie Soundtrack by a French techno duo.

Necessity is the Mutha of Invention, right?
And Break'est is the Most Important meal of the Day...truly it is.

Well...how many people know how to make inert leftovers dance their way unto your plates & bellies?
The older we get, the more I know that you've all reproduced yourselves at least once and I know that little people like yummy food too.
So this one's for the Family on a brisk new England morning.

...I got inspired
I woke up, made coffee, started blogging. An afternoon's worth of football until the 8:30PM Patriots' kickoff vs. the New Jersey Jets. I won't be up for this. I'll sleep with my #24 Ty Law on with the radio tuned to the game. I listen to it while I'm sleeping in a weird way.
Nonetheless 9:30AM creeps up on me after a morning of furious blogging, thinking & typing...I looked down & I wuz stahhvin'!
I go to the kitchen and assess the sitch: I got another glorious break'est if I put the time in...and lemme tell you. By NBC's Meet The Press at 10:30AM, I was break'esting on a delicious new invention of mine. I don't wanna RTFM it....it's probably already out there...let me have my glow for 5 minutes why don'tcha.
I decided a variant on French Toast.
I call it ""French Toast Pie" and it's really easy peasy and just a fun delicious new spin on an old favorite.

I found under the counter a 9" clear glass circular Pyrex pie dish. That started the ball rolling. I sprayed that gently with Cooking Spray but you can manually use a shortening if that's what's handy.
I preheated my oven to 400deg.
I had 4 slices of bread remaining. 2 bananas that really needed to get eaten. I had a 1/2 dozen of eggs. So this is what I did. I cut the 4 slices of bread on a bias, aka diagonally. then cut another 2 halves again. I layered this bread on the bottom of the Pyrex pie dish to cover as much of the bottom as possible. Have fun...I turned it into Impromptu Tetris.
I then beat with a fork in a deep enough bowl 2 large eggs. I added a big splash of milk (not more than 2-3 oz!!) and seasoned with ground cinnamon and a few drops of Vanilla extract.
I pour this into the Pyrex pie dish...pick it up and roll the egg mix around so the bread really sops it all up and that blank spots on the edges fill with a bit.
Let this sit.
now I took my 2 bananas, peeled them and cut them on a long, thin bias...again, aka diagonally. This enables me to cover more area. I take the banana slices and completely cover the surface of my eggs-soggy bread.
I take a little brown sugar and completely dust the surface of the "Pie" and I also sprinkle 2 pats of unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes. I distribute the butter evenly.
At this time I should have put a handful of walnuts on the pie. Ooops. Next time.
(Updated 12/11/10: I think in complete hindsight I would have executed it more l would have added a little sifted flour, walnuts, pinch of salt and a 1/2 cup of oatmeal to the dry brown sugar then use a fork to run the butter through and then use that as the topping.)

And I fired the Bad Larry in the Hot Oven. I dropped the temp to 325deg and let it cook for 35 minutes.
Pull from the oven, let rest about 5 minutes and serve in pie slices. Take a spatula and gently work the edges & bottom and the "pie crust" should pull freely from the sprayed Pyrex. Do this to the entire pie after cutting into pie slices. The pie will come out with a rounded crust edge because the bread expanded when it was wet & soggy with the eggs mixture.

And there you have it. A scoop of vanilla of ice cream would have been killer on this. I almost ate the whole thing with a little syrup. I thought it needed nuts & perhaps a hint of regular salted butter to finish it, honestly.
And I did get a small slice to my roommate...I love sharing.
So there we have it...French Toast Pie. Great for breakfast but also a great side dish...I intend to fire this at any guest-oriented brunch or break'est and serve in a 1/8 slice just to adorn the plate with homemade goodness!

For dinner...I got Leftover Pot Roast SAMMICHES!!! I still run on Willie Nelson's advice "he who can cook a Pot Roast will never dine alone". Well, my leftover pot roast I made last week gotta go...they got a date with a couple of Onion Rolls, grilled with melted American cheese and the spanish onions I caramelized just for these sammiches. Onions, lightly oiled & seasoned with kosher salt slow cooked over simmer in a cast-iron pan for 2 1/2 hours until stick-to-the-teeth sweet golden brown.
This sammich and 2-3 Idaho Potatoes cut huge honkin' steak fry style, skin on doused in oil & seasoning and baked off in a 425deg oven for 30 minutes.
Sammich & Fries. No takeout or delivery again. I'm doing better. Much better.

Next...installing my chin up bar on the closet door jamb!
Huzzah!

Get In My Belly!
The Comics Gnome POOTS....
R is for Robin

Just a quick poot with a link for further thoughts...
In the world of funnybooks, DC's ROBIN has been one of my favorite characters & properties since I was a kid.
At Newsarama Dot Com, columnist & comics historian Alan Kistler has been writing these great articles on individual superheroes and their evolving Uniform or Look over the Years.
May I present to you Alan Kistler's Agents of S.T.Y.L.E. in Flying High With Robin
I've already posted a "serious" thought on the subject in the which you'll see first when you click the link...which I added to since you can't Edit thse posts and I hadda correct myself... Nonetheless I'd suggest then going to the top of the page and working down to see all the pretty pictures! Kistler does a great job of documenting & critiquing 5 different Robins and just a few alternate takes over the 60 year history of the youthful laughing daredevil hero and one of the 1st kid sidekicks.

1994 ZERO HOUR starring a young time-lost Robin II Jason Todd alongside Robin III Tim Drake at the beginning of his crimefighting career.

and the Frank Miller DARK KNIGHT of the 1980s and his future Robin, Carrie Kelly...
the Acronym is KISS...Keep it Simple, Silly.

I posit you can apply Red, Yellow, Green and some "R" Motif on any youthful DC superhero and it invokes this lineage instantly...you presume that young hero is probably a Robin regardless of any potential gender, race or space/time.

Such as 1992's DC Elseworld's ROBIN 3000. This is mos def'nitly Robin to an imaginary future Batman...

or 1990's BATMAN: DIGITAL JUSTICE where a future Batman needs his Robin to fight the Joker Virus in the late 21st Century.

All this from a kid in Green Shorts & Pixie Boots.

Coffee is for Closers Only!
aka: Lotsa Donuts on the Power Play

Oh S#!t
“COFFEE IS FOR CLOSERS!!!”
Readers of the PUCK know I bring this up every so often but only when I need to…
I remember this one. At the Hockey Game with Leah, aka OCHO’s very own CrackedKiwi and another mate. I was screaming out this unto the Gahhden Ice one Lacklustre Match of the Mid-to-Late 1990s…during the Power Play of course.
I had recently seen once again the magnificent cinema version of David Mamet’s stage production “Glengarry GlenRoss” and found it applied to the On-Ice goings on.
It’s at 0:24 of this video so please “Press Play” and enter the Hyperreality of My Context…and so you don’t have to watch the whole thing but this one scene “made” Alec Baldwin BTW…

What goes well with Coffee?
DONUTS!

Well…these Donuts Are Not going Great With Coffee.
I’m talking about the Boston Bruins getting “donuts” on their Power Play.
Last Night, Dec. 4 vs TOR; 0-for-2 on the Power Play.
Nov. 28 vs. ATL; 0-for-4
Nov. 26 vs. CAR; 0-for-4
Nov. 22 vs TAM; 0-for-2
Nov. 18 vs FLA; 0-for-2
Nov. 17 vs NYR; 0-for-3
Nov. 13 vs OTT; 0-for-2
Nov. 11 vs MON; 0-for-4
Nov. 6 vs STL; 0-for-3
Nov. 3 vs BUF; 0-for-4…
That’s just this past month.
The only multiple Power Play Goal nights all season long were…
Nov. 5 vs WAS; 2-for-3
Sep 21 vs WAS; 3-for-4.
Two Games out of 25 so far…
Every other game not mentioned in the list All Season Long were either “0-for__” or “1-for-__”.
Donuts are for Homers…and Apparently Bruins. For real.

This season in 25 games, the Black & Gold have 15 goals in 90 Power Play opportunities. Nonetheless, the Bruins are ranked 15th in the 30 NHL Teams for the PP.
Numbers don’t lie…but still coffee is for closers.
I think the Beantowne Bees deserve some Coffee for their Bearclaws, eh? I see the Power Play Unit as the biggest thing to worry about.

The Bruins with returning injured forwards now have a glut of talent. That can only mean changes are a’comin’. Notwithstanding a mediocre Power Play, the Bruins are in a word “decent” this year. The year is too early to call and no one should be doing that until March anyhoo. Entertaining lively spirited gameplay cannot be faked…it’s alive & well a few nights a week on your television or downtown in the sports arena.
‘Tis the Season and we’ve only just passed its Quarter Length. Plenty of action, almost too many fights but overall…not too bad.
I’m having fun.
Are you?
I’m having coffee but I deserve it*

iRawk…Therefore iPod!
Sleigh Bells Ring Edition!

The 5th Generation iPod nano, circa 2009-early ’10.
Nickname: Arios Gundam, named after my Favorite Anime Giant Robo.

Ho Ho Ho!
I’m usually a Bah Humbug but this year I think I’m in the Holiday Spirit.
Last year, I couldn’t Sync my iPod due to Technical Difficulties…any IT person will confirm this is usually a User-End Problem but iDigress…since I couldn’t Sync, I couldn’t have my Holiday Tunes.
Bummer.

This Year Though…
Sleigh Bell Ring! Won’tcha Listen? La la la! Snow is Glistening.
And this is how I sound at work. While I’m cooking. I make break’est for smaht people at a World-Famous Genius Factory…this is bonadife, I assure you.
And I work & cook & serve & sing along with my personal playlist of Holiday Tunes.
You have now entered…The Holi-Daze!

Interlude: I just remembered a dream from last night or rather all morning. A Work Stress Dream…we all have them & they’re all based on relationships or duties. I was trying to videotape an occurrence or an annoyance…but dialing in the gadget & not getting the right menu, et al. A message about Futility in Attachment. Although I work for Smaht People, I work with pretty Average People. Normal People who are all at once Sublimely Great & Downright Awful…Just Like Me! I promised myself I’d videotape my Workplace Bully, aka Chucklehead Rummy with Arios Gundam, my clever little Orange Mecha, my Great Gadget in the Act. After that permission I gave myself, I mysteriously gained Equanimity over the matter and the nomenclature to boot…Peace on Earth…Goodwill to Men? Bah humbug…

So iJam on my little iPod with its external mic/speaker in a cubbish storage pan for simple amplification. And occasionally sing along…with smiles from my guests and looks both average, nice & mean from my co-workers!
I’m on the hook to cook a duck for X-Mas with my Ma. I’ve never cooked a duck before.
So I arranged a SuperSupper with the AwesomeFriends. Doctor Hooey loves Duck. Big Fan. His wife Action Grrrl loves duck as well. And I made for the first time in the French Traditition
Duck a l’Orange. And executed the duck well enough to merit a few good points of cooking the bird. Nonetheless overall it was a fine dinner with good friends, drink & good company. Action Grrl made fresh cookies for dessert that I’m still eating. Yum.
And all night long we’re listening to my Holiday Playlist. Sleigh Bell Rings, Runover Grandmas, 12 different versions of the 12 Days and a heavy hand of The Nutcracker tempered with The Charlie Brown Christmas.

Meanwhile…Rev Sully Still Goo-Goo for GaGa! Film at 11! Or any Bloody Time…It’s On the iPod!
Rah-rah oh ya ya.
Rom ma ai ya ya
Gaga oh la la!
Brama bramaya!

Well that’s what I say. I got a lot of energy and I’m a Morning Person. So belting out this random Gobbledyguk at 6AM, jacked up on coffee & a 20+ minute walk in brisk weather…I find this phrase belting out of my mouth and the usual looks from the rest of the staff.
Hey…f@#k ‘em if they ain’t with the Times, yo. ^_~ I ain’tcho free bitch…

I want your love…LA LA LA I want your love…

What a hook. What a video! I feel like a kid again. This video captures the Spirit of the First MTV Generation. Sexy, fresh Pop music. Well in all honesty I am a year or two behind and showing it, right? In parts it sounds like the “Wendy & Lisa” breakdowns of Prince’s The Revolution from the nascent MTV…then flashy like New Wave sensations Missing Persons and their seminal vid “Words”

I’m not too Goo Goo for GaGa.
That "Just Dance" song Just Annoys Me...
and it's "Ollie Ollie Oxen Free" for "Alejandro"
So Santa Giveth & Santa Taketh Away…nonetheless I bought Bad Romance off the iTunes Store...for $1.99 Video Sight Unseen fondly remembering going to the Olde Record Store & getting 45RPM Singles.
